Summer game convention season opens this year with the 2011 Origins Game Fair in Columbus, Ohio. While not as big as the venerable Gen Con, it is still a formidable convention with many game offerings. To make you con-going experience more pleasant we present the list of exhibitors and vendors attending Origins 2011, as well as their web site links and a brief description of each company. Advice for Gamers Attending Origins Game Fair 2009

Which, sadly, does not include me. There was a brief moment a few months ago when I considered attending both Origins and Gen Con, but the harsh economic realities quickly quashed that idea. So, Gen Con yes, Origins no. Which is quite annoying because there was some interesting stuff I wanted to check out this year. Rather than wallow in misery, I thought it might be helpful to share some tips I picked up over the past few years.

1. How to get a room at the Drury Inn.

The Drury is attached to the convention center and right next to the food court. It is in a prime location and relatively cheap. This also makes it nearly impossible to get a room. You have no chance for this year, but if you show up on Wednesday, early enough, you have a shot at getting a room here next year. My suggestion is the Crowne Plaza across the street, not as close, but cheap and clean.

2. Buy a giant soda cup and refill in the food court cheap all weekend.

It used to be 25 cents for a refill, but I am sure it went up. Even last year it was more than that, but I cannot remember the amount.

3. DO NOT eat at “Fame’s Diner” for breakfast.

Trust me on this one.

4. DO eat at the “Krema Nut Company”

Best peanut butter and jelly sandwich in Ohio! Also dirt cheap and tasty. Also a great source for a goofy t-shirt that has a dancing peanut on it that says “I am nuts about you.” Great for the non-gamer spouse.

5. The food court is a zoo between rounds at lunch and dinner. Plan for some significant lines and waits. The “Subway” franchise line tends to be the fastest.

6. Use the free, downloadable food court coupons for some savings. Every little bit helps!

My only other advice is to try some game you have never played before. I always wanted to try the “National Security Decision Making” game, but never had the time. Also, the “Living Arcanis” campaign is ending after six years, so that promises to be interesting. In the vendor area, my friends over at www.d20pro.com have some new version of their online tabletop in the offing that sounds interesting. Geekchiq will be there with their high-end gaming tables. I really want to check one of these out, since I actually need a kitchen table.

Also, I have the list of Origins 2009 vendors and exhibitors up on rpgseek.com, for those that cannot attend and would still like to find ways to spend their money. ;-)

Origins 2009 Vendor Website List and Search Engine on RPGSeek.com

RPGSeek.com is hosting a list of the Origins 2009 vendor’s websites. The list includes vendor name, website link and a brief description of what they sell/do. I created the list on livingdice.com last year and it got great feedback.

This year I made some improvements to both its readability and utility. Rather than host the list on livingdice.com, I moved the Origins 2009 vendor list to the link directory I maintain at RPGSeek.com. It allows for much easier searching, browsing and management. To make searching even easier, I created a Google custom search engine that only indexes this specific list of sites (135 websites. There are 145 vendors, but some do not have websites or are simply hard to find.) and added it to the RPGSeek.com front page. For those unfamiliar with a Google custom search engine, they are maintained by a human being (in this case, me) and allow extremely precise control over which sites come back in the search results. When you run a search through the Origins vendor search engine, every result came from one of the listed vendor sites. Certainly more efficient than just browsing 135 sites. (Trust me, I visited each site and it takes a LONG time.)

If you have any comments or corrections regarding the list, please let me know and I will get it updated. If you are a vendor I left off the list (Sorry!), please use the submit link button on RPGSeek.com and I will get you added.

Should you find the engine and link list useful, please submit it to your favorite social bookmarking site. I normally do not ask for such things, but I think this is probably one of my more useful creations.

Gen Con Registration Starts 2-15–Hotel Registration on 2-17

I am buried at work and blogging is correspondingly light, but a looming deadline roused me to post. Gen Con registration opens this Sunday (2-15-09) for badge purchases. Gen Con is still months away, but an early badge purchase is critical to access the hotel reservation system that goes live on Tuesday (2-17-09) at 12:00 EST.

A quick summary for those who do not know how Gen Con hotel reservation system functions. After you purchase a badge, Gen Con sends you an access code that you use on a separate web site to make hotel reservations. All of the rooms through this third-party system are from the “Gen Con Block” of rooms and significantly cheaper than making the reservation yourself through a hotel or other method. It is my understanding that last year most of the “block” rooms were around $165.00 per night. I already have reservations at the Crowne Plaza for Gen Con (this is my backup plan) and they are running $320.00 per night! I am definitely trying for the discount rooms. More cash for game purchases. ;-)

The big discount also creates high demand for the block rooms. Previous attendees told me that the cheap “block” rooms sell out the first day, often in the first hour after they go on sale. Hence the reason for this post. I am giving everyone fair warning.

Gamer Tools Review: The ZÜCA Wheeled Bag

The ZÜCA is quite possibly the world’s best gamer bag for convention goers. Trask has been asking me to do a review for a while. He even featured it in this year’s ‘10 Christmas Gift Ideas for a Role-Playing Gamer‘ due to all my man-love speech.

So, without further ado, I will begin…

Trask and I first saw the ZÜCA at the Origins 2006 Convention. We were both intrigued, but the $100+ price tag was a turn-off. I almost went back and got one on Sunday; however, I had exhausted my discretionary spending, so took a business card instead…. and never forgot the things I saw that day!

At Origins 2007, I had made up my mind to get one of these things, as I was in need of a new gamer bag. I really liked the look and the concept. Even though they were originally designed for 8-year-old girls who like to ice skate (I hope gamers bypass the sequined pink bag option), it was perfect for gamers on the go. However, ZÜCA did not have a booth at that convention. Foiled again!

But that didn’t stop me. In early 2008, I was gifted with an Amazon.com gift certificate through work. Well that was it, I purchased my ZÜCA. And I have never been more happy with a gaming bag.

I have had the ZÜCA at Origins 2008 as well as local conventions and game days. I find it perfect for my RPG needs. The main compartment is the perfect size for gaming books. And, its many pockets and compartments carry my full complement of gaming accessories (and snacks). And the best part, I always have everything in one place. I set my ZÜCA right next to my desk at home, and all of the stuff I keep in it, stays in it. So when I need to go, I can go in an instant and not have to remember if I have packed everything.

So what sets the ZÜCA apart from a normal bag or backpack?

Con Shoulder – The worst part about going to a 4-day convention is coming home with both aching feet and aching shoulders. Carrying around gaming supplies and books is a heavy load and four days really takes its toll. You can have two sore shoulders from a backpack or one REALLY sore shoulder from a sling bag. Well with the ZÜCA, there is nothing. You just have to wheel the thing behind you like a piece of luggage. And it has a handle to grab if, for some reason, you hit a space where rolling doesn’t work so well, like a staircase. The ZÜCA actually does stairs really well thanks to it’s secondary wheel; but, for big stairs I have found it easier to just pick up the thing and go.
Con Feet – The before mentioned sore feet? Well the ZÜCA is built to be able to sit on. That is right, you are wheeling around a portable chair with you too! It is not the most comfortable seat in the world, and you wouldn’t want to sit on it long term, but it works great for something in a pinch. Standing in line waiting for your RPG to start? Sit instead.
More workspace – And that flat hard top that is designed for sitting, makes great auxiliary table space at the game table. I routinely set books, food, drinks, on top of that instead of being kicked on the floor or knocked over on the table (Note: I am usually the one doing the kicking and knocking). And since it is like a mini locker, I set it next to me, door open, and all my books are within easy reach.
Rugged – With a durable aluminum frame, this thing can take a beating and keep going. I had to replace my gamer bag every couple of years due to tears, rips, etc. I am going one year strong on the ZÜCA and have no worn areas. Not, even the mesh netting on the side, since it is somewhat protected by the metal frame.
Replaceable Bag – Part of me wishes that the bag would rip apart and need to be replaced though. Then I would have an excuse to replace it with this cool Flame Job Bag! FYI:The bag is replaceable and you can keep the same frame, which is the expensive part.

The negatives of the ZÜCA are minimal. Part of me wishes that it was slightly larger. But, at least this way it forces me to bring less stuff with me on the airline (a costly thing now). And you can use the ZÜCA as an overhead bin bag on an airplane if you wanted (I haven’t done that yet). Really, the negative most people will cite is the price. The frames for the ZÜCA sport are $100. From there the bags that go in them are around $30 to $45 depending on how pimped out it is (you can get bags that turn the ZÜCA into a pet carrier). But, I found the price to be well worth it, especially over the long haul.

If you do get a ZÜCA, please just do yourself and everyone around you a favor. You aren’t that 8-year-old ice skating girl, so don’t get the wheels with lights that flash as they turn.

Are Local Game Conventions a Dying Institution?

Yesterday, I forked out $30.00 for a weekend pass to the sole remaining gaming convention in my state. In previous years, it was a bazaar of gaming, cos-play (creepy!) and a thriving vendor area. The entire convention center hummed with activity and table space was at a premium. It is a well run convention with lots of events and great organization. Even the venue, a convention center was quite nice.

I did not do an accurate census, but it was my perception that attendance was significantly down this year. Keep in mind, this is the biggest gaming convention in the entire state. There are some other sci-fi/fantasy conventions with ancillary gaming(WesterCon ,) but I am not counting those.

I discussed this with my usual gaming cronies and we came up with some ideas as to why it was so poorly attended this year.

1. Gas prices discouraged driving

2. Online gaming

3. Everyone is holed-up at home playing 4th edition

4. High costs to attend ($40.00) for the weekend

I am quite concerned about this, as conventions are the only oppportunity to run large events, like “Battle Interactives” and I rather enjoy playing in this kind of event.

I would like to know if this is specific to my area (Arizona) or are other gaming conventions in other regions also seeing a decline? If so, why do you think it is happening?
