I wrote a couple modules for the Living Arcanis campaign last year and would like some feedback. I thought they were pretty good, but they released quietly and generally disappeared into the ocean of modules for Living Arcanis and I never received any feedback from the player base if they were any good. Therefore, I invite you, my readership to download these free modules and let me know if I have a future as a module writer or should I stick to information technology.

The modules use the 3.5 OGL system, plus some world-specific information from Paradigm Concept’s Arcanis books. I wrote two modules, but read “Iwa” first. It was the last one I wrote, so I think it is my best effort and most reflective of my current writing ability. I am embedding Iwa in this post, so you can read it online at the bottom of this post or you can use the links below for the zip version.

Iwa Download

Tree of Shadows Download

If you are curious about the other modules I contributed to or were from my region, check out the Midake region home page.

Any feedback is welcome, so drop me a line or a comment please!

Paradigm Concepts released 29 of their “Living Arcanis” modules from years 3 and 4 of the campaign helpfully packaged in zip files. I was a big fan of Living Arcanis and even wrote some modules for one of the Arcanis regions (Midake, if you are interested). The modules are all set in the Arcanis universe, so unless you have the Arcanis books, there may be some terminology and long-term plots that you may not understand. Though, I am certain that Paradigm would happily sell you the required books to bring you up to speed. Regardless, the price is right (free) and Arcanis is noted for having above average writing and fun encounters. I highly suggest checking them out.

I have not had time to read through it thoroughly, but it is beautiful and includes excellent maps. I will do a more complete look at the adventure and the rules tomorrow.

I highly suggest you also download the maps as well. In a new twist; there are two versions of the maps, standard and sized for a plotter-printer. I have never seen this before from a gaming company, but I like it.

Also, the game is now actually for sale. You can get a base book for $59.95 or one of the special “chest” editions with a subscription to the web site, art book, etc for between $59.95 to $94.90.

The guys over at D20Pro.com , producers of the excellent D20Pro Online RPG Tabletop , are offering a d20 module for download…free!

The module, entitled “Kobold’s Revenge: Die Adventurer! Die! ” is a romp through a cavern system with the players controlling a group of lowly kobolds, bent on slaying the heroic meat….er…humans.

Although designed for use with the D20pro online tabletop software, the download includes a PDF that allows anyone to run the module without the software.

As to module quality, I did a quick read of the module and found it to be an entertaining take on the standard dungeon crawl. It is clearly written and has all the parts you need to run the adventure.

If you are interested in learning more about the D20Pro tabletop, I did a review of it last month. You can read my review here .

You can click here for the download page. Go forth and take advantage of free gaming goodness!

D20Pro has a booth at Gen Con this year. I highly recommend dropping by for a demo of their product. My game group sat down for a demo and walked away with enough licenses for all of us. I promise it will be worth your time.

Also, they have an monumentally stupid ordering system that forces you to order weeks in advance. Get past those obstacles and there are literally dozens of modules. The RPGA has modules for download for the following campaigns:

EDIT: The campaigns below are all on the RPGA site. Sorry it was not clearer in the original post.

Star Wars

Eberron (aka Xen’Drik Expeditions)

Module Count: BIG!

I am sure there are more, so please let me know of any others.

In addition to my recent blogging habit, I am an Invisible King for the “Living Arcanis” campaign. Invisible Kings (IKs) maintain control over a specific region of the campaign, write modules and organize game days. My section is a city called “Midake” in the nation of “Altheria.” It is an Arabic flavored region, famed for its firearms and technology. As part of my responsibilities, I have to write modules. I have written two complete modules myself and a cooperative effort with the other two IKs for my regions( IKs come in groups of three.) I would very much like to hear some feedback from non-Arcanis players about my writing and stories. Be honest, my ego cannot be bruised. ;-)

Here is the download page for my modules.

Midake Module Download Page

The moduels I wrote and can be blamed for are:

1. “A Trickle Down Deal” –co-writer only

2. “Tree of Shadows” —solo effort

3. “Iwa” — solo effort

Although written for “Living Arcanis,” feel free to use them for a home game. I am very curious how a non-Arcanis player feels about them.

Drop me an email or a comment with your thoughts, questions or rant. All feedback is welcome.

I loved “Gamma World.” It was the first non-fantasy game I ever played and it was a winner. It is also responsible for one of the great tragedies of my gaming life.

Other than the main books, there were five modules that formed a campaign published. If you are not familiar with a 20 year-old series of modules, here is the complete list.

GW6, Alpha Factor by Kim Eastland (ISBN 0-88038-294-5)

GW7, Beta Principle by Bruce Nesmith (ISBN 0-88038-404-2)

GW8, Gamma Base by Kim Eastland (ISBN 0-88038-405-0)

GW9, Delta Fragment by Kim Eastland (ISBN 0-88038-406-9)

GW10, Epsilon Cyborgs by Kim Eastland (ISBN 0-88038-477-8)

I loved these modules. They had a great story, cool art and some of the best city maps of the day. Everything about them demanded I should run them for my players. I purchased each of them with the intention of running them when the series completed.

Then TSR dropped that edition of “Gamma World.” I was left with five modules building up to an interesting conclusion and no conclusion.

This is how pathetic I am . I actually tried to track down an email address for Kim Eastland to find out the plot outline for the last module. I came up dry, but I did find something else interesting.

Surprisingly, I am not alone.

A group of dedicated Gamma World fans put together the final module. The module even has the correct font and typeface! It looks like an authentic early 80s TSR GW module.

GW11 The Omega Project

There is also a bonus module, GW5 “Rapture of the Deep.”

I have read both modules and they are worthy additions to the GW canon. My congratulations to Les Braun and all of his collaborators.

That said, I still want to talk to Kim Eastland and get a story outline for the “official” version. So if you have any information on this, drop me a line.

All too often a DM is short on time and long on players in need of a challenge. Rather than throw something together, I have a great resource that will provide modules, complete with maps and monsters for a variety of challenge ratings…for free.

Paradigm Concepts runs a “Living” d20 campaign called “Living Arcanis,” based on their “Arcanis” campaign books. For those unfamiliar with the concept a “Living” game has a common set of rules and character tracking, so a player in New York can play in California without worrying about “house” rules. Essentially, it is an MMORPG for tabletop gamers. The campaign has run for the past five years and has a strong player base. Over 100+ modules have been published.

The result of this is that Paradigm solicits and regularly publishes player written modules for the campaign. Each module is designed to run in a four hour convention slot, so it is perfect for a “quickie” home game. Although designed for the “Arcanis” universe, many of the modules use only base monsters and equipment and are readily adaptable to the home game.

In the interests of full disclosure, I write modules for the campaign and run one of its regions. It is, in my opinion, one of the best campaigns for d20 out there.
