Hasbro Closes Cranium Office

Hasbro smashes some heads over at the Cranium office. 11 pink slips and 8 employees farmed out to other areas of the company. I regularly play board games, but Cranium just seemed too…Starbucks (the coffee shop, not the BSG viper pilot) for me to ever play.  That said, many people play “Cranium,” given that Hasbro paid 77 million for the company.  I know this is a bit far afield from my usual topics, but it is game industry related, so I thought it worth a post.

One thing did occur to me though. If Hasbro feels that absorbing Cranium will cut costs, I wonder if anyone ever floated the idea of  trimming  “Wizards of the Coast” and bringing it into the greater Hasbro fold?

I’m sure it has. I suspect that one of two things will happen withing the next five years. Either WotC will be Sold off or It will be brought more into the Hasbro fold as you suggest. If I was a betting man, I’d say your suggestion is more likely.

That’s too bad that they closed the Cranium office. Although I don’t own the game, I’ve played it many times with friends. I wonder if it is more of a strategic move by Hasbro, or a sign of the times in regards to the economy. With as popular as that game is, I’d imagine that it was more of a strategic move than anything. Although, I don’t know why they would do that.
